Show Car Guidelines
A Show Car Exemption may be granted to vehicles that are used primarily for show purposes and are driven
minimally on the road. The Show Car Exemption involves station management inspecting the vehicle and
recording an odometer reading. The vehicle must be presented at a station in order to be considered for
a Show Car Exemption. An exemption can not be granted based on photographs.
Show Car Exemptions are good for up to two years or one test cycle.
The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for a show car exemption:
- Mileage can not exceed 3,000 miles per year, or 6,000
miles for the two-year test cycle. If a vehicle
was issued a show car exemption in the past the odometer
reading will be compared to the previous reading. If
mileage is high the customer may be asked to provide proof
(entrance forms) of long distance travel to car shows. If
mileage is high, the show car exemption can not be issued
from the station. Program management has to review
the request and will contact the customer with a decision.
- Car show entry forms must be presented at the time of the request.
Show cars must have been entered in two car shows per year for the two-year test cycle.
Four entry forms are required at the time of the request. If four entry forms are not presented,
other documentation or awards, such as ribbons, trophies, and exhibition photographs or news articles
featuring the vehicle will be considered, but program management will have to approve the request, therefore
the exemption will not be issued from the station at the time of the request. Another item headquarters
may take into consideration is proof of a low (under 3,000) mileage insurance policy.
- The condition of the vehicle must be “show quality” as indicated by the interior and exterior of the
vehicle being maintained in good condition (ie. Free of rust, scratches, dents, paint chips, burns, dirty
or torn interior, dirty engine compartment, worn tires, etc.)
If a vehicle is denied a Show Car Exemption at the station, the customer is welcome to complete a Show Car
Appeal form, which will be forwarded, along with proper documentation, to program management for further
review.
Specialty Exemption Guidelines
A Specialty Exemption may be granted to vehicles that are modified
for recreational purposes, such as dune buggies and kit cars,
and not designed for year round use on highways. The vehicle
must be presented at a station for a visual inspection in order
to be considered for a Specialty Exemption. An exemption
can not be granted based on photographs.
Specialty Exemptions are good for up to two years or one test
cycle.
The following criteria will be used to determine if a vehicle
is eligible for a Specialty Exemption:
- Proof of use as a recreational vehicle. The
manufacturer’s certificate of origin or title will be
considered proof of a vehicle’s use for recreational
purposes
- The vehicle must match its description.
- Proof that the vehicle is used for recreational purposes
and driven minimally on the road. The vehicle
owner may present a low (under 3,000) mileage insurance policy,
or if previously exempted, the vehicle’s odometer reading
will be compared to the previous reading.
If a vehicle in denied a Specialty Exemption at the station,
the customer is welcome to complete a Specialty Exemption Appeal
form, which will be forwarded, along with proper documentation,
to program management for further review
